The Incredible Husky

Magnificent, robust and spirited, huskies share a close tie with their wolf ancestors.  Despite centuries of domestic breeding, the Husky remains free in spirit and runs where the wind takes him.  There is no greater happiness than feeling the ground move beneath his feet and before he realizes, he has ventured too far from home and doesn’t know the way back, or maybe doesn’t even care.  Huskies are not a breed known for their heeling abilities, or their tendency to dote on their owners.  There is a reason why one of the first pieces of advice a knowing husky owner gives is ‘always keep them on a lead!’ Exclamation! Exclamation!  Huskies are fairly self-sufficient with strong hunting drives and the ability to thrive in inclement weather.  They do not view their owners as a necessity, merely a comfortable friend who gives hand-outs.  Now don’t get me wrong, huskies are sweet, affectionate, playful, and love love love attention.  But there is always this overwhelming instinct that seems to drive them.  Most husky owners I know say this is what makes a husky and they wouldn’t change a thing about them.  I am in total agreement, but it is a trait that does not match everyone’s living style or personality.

Here is a particularly humorous list of common husky attitudes or ‘Lessons I’ve learned from my Husky’.  The original source is from Indy Homes for Huskies.

Greet every day with gusto.    It’s always more fun outside – especially when it’s storming.    Live life to its fullest.    Always store cookies on the top shelf.    Be nice to people with food, they may share.    There are no strangers, just friends we haven’t met yet.    An innocent look can go a long way in avoiding a guilty conviction.    The back of the couch makes a great launch pad.   Dog beds are for dogs – not huskies.    Counters are fur surfing, tables for napping.    If you’re good during grooming you’ll get a cookie.  If you scream your head off, you’ll get two cookies.    “Catch Me If You Can” should be an Olympic event.    Play hard.  Love unconditionally.    Fragile objects belong in a museum, not in a home.    Fur, mud and dirt can all be cleaned up.    A good vacuum cleaner is hard to find.    Always keep cool.    Nothing is completely escape-proof.    Ditto for “indestructible.”    Squirrels are the enemy.    Idle paws are the devil’s tools.    “Sit,” and any other command, is open to negotiation.    That’s mine.  Even if I don’t want it, it’s still mine.    It is possible to dig a hole to China.  You just have to be persistent.  Fetch is a stupid game.  If you want the ball, stop throwing it away!    Why walk when you can gallop?    Dog slobber is good for your skin.    Nothing says “I Love You” like a good tackle or body slam.    You lounge on the furniture, why shouldn’t I?    Sometimes it’s good to be lead dog.    It’s a husky thing.  You wouldn’t understand.

  1. Fits them to a “T” but they are also very loyal πŸ™‚
I purchased “Little Romeo” from you in March 2013
“Gizzmo” who he is now called is the most beautiful, comedian, gymnastic as he loves doing somersaults for no apparent reason (?) fun, loving, gentle, yet a “bull in a china shop” kind of baby, just turned 2yrs young on Feb 12th and weighs in at a “dainty” 85lbs slim πŸ™‚ Thank you so much Anika, We couldn’t have found a better, more beautiful, gentle loving baby if we tried!! And the fact that after registering him and finding that he was a 6th generation from our 1987 huskies just put the icing on the Most Wanted Beautiful Husky!! He may be the youngest of our 3 (Takoma 12yrs, Miakoda 3 1/2yrs) and the Largest (85lbs) but he is Always the 1st to Submit to his “brother & sister” πŸ™‚ So Thank you!! When people ask where could they get a beautiful and calm Husky like Giz, we send them in your direction

    1. Oh so nice to hear from you! I am thrilled to know he is doing so well πŸ™‚ That is wonderful! Gizzmo was from an exceptional litter. We kept one of his brothers, named Riddick, and he is now the prized stud of the kennel. Such a bunch of perfect Huskies those pups were!

  2. They are amazing!! That is good to know when the time comes for me to get another one πŸ™‚ He is so precious! Such a Comedian he is!

  3. They are amazing. We just lost one of our huskies this week, quite unexpectedly. She was such a character, loved to hike, run, hunt, and (of all things for a husky) swim! looking at your dogs and pups is wonderful. Thank you!
Will you be breeding again this year? Are either of the two pups listed Willy or Max, available?
